The Balinese/ how GAMBLING saved Galveston

The Balinese is an alternative to the current trend in Galveston of the construction of low density developments of second family homes. the project explores ideas of un-building and redistribution to create densities of tourism as the island is decamped. The Balinese is a condenser that proliferates along the seawall and other points of interest and is connected to the bay and the rest of the island by a light rail system. The substrate interfaces with the city grid through time, and acts as a mediator between the different spatial and temporal scales of differing activities of tourism (Casino and Excursionism), offering moments of spectacle and normality.

  1. Nice work Sara. Architecture as a field/ landscape is an interesting dynamic that gives your project more relevance in my opinion. Patrick Schumacher writes quite a bit about this and using digital media, e.g. parametrics, to drive the design. Here, it looks like you found a site where it is conducive as a mediator that is both complimentary to its adjacencies and has the potential for spectacle within its nooks. I think your approach (subtle, elegant) is the most proper, instead of trying to dominate the surrounding area with some crazy, organic forms that look like they came from a Sci-fi movie. Do you have a site map?
