Menil Cafe is being built!
Hey everyone,
I was in the Rice Building Workshop studio last spring and we worked on a cafe design for the Menil Collection in Houston. The press release just came out that they are moving forward with the cafe, and it will be constructed in 2012. Check it out in the Houston Chronicle link below.

Portfolio Updated
Open publication - Free publishing - More 2011
After reviewing the first test print from Blurb, there were a few things I needed to change:
_Solid color blocks, like the previous cover show slight imperfections when printed
_Images that bleed across two pages are pinched in the middle, so you don't see the whole image very well. To counter I tried duplicating and separating the images to account for this gap.
_Rearranged the order of projects and edited/deleted a few things

Portfolio & other news
Been a while since I have posted anything. Recently I was featured on SuckerPunchDaily.com (http://www.suckerpunchdaily.com/tag/jon-martin/) as well as Urukia Architecture and Design Magazine (http://www.urukia.com/hybrid-tower-jon-martin/) for my Hybrid Tower project in Steve's studio.
Kind of cool; I wasn't trying to get featured on Urukia (never heard of them), but they must have found my images from SuckerPunch and I got featured right next to Zaha.
I received my first copy of my portfolio today from Blurb. I like the quality of the book. There are a few things to change, but overall not bad.

Studio project
This was a 2.5 week urbanism project that will hopefully be shown during an exhibition highlighting our professors work along with some of our studio work as well. He is the current guest professor here. There will also be a lecture this Wednesday which I will post the link once it is put up online.

I am sorry if the image is not of high quality; I had to save it down to fit.

Here's a website from a critic I had last quarter and a candidate for tenure as OSU. It's simple and clean.

Reference book to buy
You should buy this book:
It's like a mini-time saver standards book. I just got it and it is as advertised.
Very handy.

Freetime in 3ds Max
These are just some random experiments within 3ds max.
This is a sss (sub-surface-scattering) material test. Kind of like skin, or gel of some sort. Looks nice, but takes a while to render and setup.

This is an Ivy grower from guruware.at. Very cool and easy to use. Setup is fast and it generates quickly.

This is a grass test using the particle systems (which are incredibly powerful and pretty easy). Basically model a few blades of grass as simple poly's and scatter them on a surface using a particle system. This can be done for trees, rocks, basically anything.
